Vic: Seven candidates for Benalla by election

MELBOURNE, April 27 AAP - Seven people will contest the May 13 by-election for the
state seat of Benalla following the close of nominations today, the Victorian Electoral
Commission (VEC) said.

The nominees include three independents: investor Maurice Smith, farmer Bill Hill and
accountant Geoff Rowe.

The other candidates are veterinarian Bill Sykes (National Party), motivational speaker
Denise Allen (ALP), book-editor Janet Mackenzie (Australian Greens) and mediator Alf Thorpe
(Australian Reform Party).

The ALP needs a swing of about 7.4 per cent to win Benalla, which was held by former
National Party leader Pat McNamara for 18 years until he resigned from state parliament
earlier this month.
