Fed: New GM food laws flawed: GeneEthics

An industry group has warned the new food labelling laws for genetically modified products
are flawed and expose consumers to untested food.

GeneEthics Network director BOB PHELPS says the new laws, to take effect from today,
deny consumers the right to know everything about the foods they eat.

He says food outlets should demand they are supplied with products that are not genetically
engineered.

Mr PHELPS says the duty of care, especially to the sick, the elderly and the young,
requires everyone to ensure that all foods served are entirely safe.

The new laws will require products to include in their labelling details on any ingredients
which have been genetically modified.

But refined genetically engineered oil and sugars which are not found in the final
product will not be listed, nor GM processing aids.

Restaurants and food outlets serving foods made from GM products are not required to
disclose the nature of the food.
