FED:Govt announces new detention centre in Tas
By Adam Gartrell and Patrick Caruana
CANBERRA, April 5 AAP - The federal government will spend almost $15 million upgrading
a Tasmanian army barracks to house up to 400 asylum seekers for six months.
Immigration Minister Chris Bowen says the defence facility at Pontville near Hobart
will be up and running next month and will initially house about 250 single adult men.
The announcement comes as the government continues to look for ways to ease overcrowding
in its detention centres on Christmas Island and the mainland.
"The government has acknowledged the pressures on our detention facilities and this
new accommodation will help to relieve the strain on the system," Mr Bowen said.
The government says the centre - consisting mainly of army dorm buildings - will be
used for just six months while work is completed on new detention centres in the Northern
Territory and Western Australia.
Coalition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison said the government had announced new
detention centres in every corner of Australia.
"The only place they are not building a detention centre is in East Timor, which is
where they promised to build one," Mr Morrison said.
Tasmanian Premier Lara Giddings has written to Mr Bowen seeking assurances that detainees
will be treated properly.
Ms Giddings said she was particularly concerned about how the asylum seekers would
be looked after during the region's notoriously cold winter.
"If there are to be detainees there on commonwealth land, I want to ensure that those
detainees have adequate heating, clothing and any other needs they may have," she said.
Federal independent MP Andrew Wilkie said he had concerns about the centre which would
sit just outside his Hobart-based electorate.
"I'll be holding the immigration minister, Chris Bowen, to his commitment that this
centre only be temporary," he said in a statement.
The Australian Greens said the move was a bandaid solution.
"Rather than tinkering around the edges, this failing system needs a total review and
overhaul," Greens' senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
Amnesty International's Graham Thom said the government should be looking for more
humane and cost effective alternatives to detention.
But local Brighton Council Mayor Tony Foster said he supported the plan and believed
his community would too.
Mr Foster even said he hoped he could take some of the residents on sightseeing tours
around the area, including to a nearby wildlife centre.
"I'm sure a lot of these people have never experienced something like that," he told the ABC.
The facility, in the Labor-held seat of Lyons, was previously used to house refugees
after the 1999 Kosovo crisis.

Fed: Fertiliser costs rise 40 per cent in Queensland
By Cathy Alexander
CANBERRA, April 29 AAP - Queensland grain farmers are reeling from a 40 per cent increase
in the cost of fertiliser over the past four years.
Lobby group Agforce Grains, which conducted research for a Senate inquiry investigating
the soaring price of fertiliser, said costs had risen at 14 times the rate of inflation.
The inquiry is investigating allegations of monopolistic and cartel behaviour in the
fertiliser industry.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission also is looking for any anti-competitive
conduct in the fertiliser industry.
AgForce grains president Lyndon Pfeffer said the cost of fertiliser and chemical inputs
for barley had increased 40 per cent - from $165/ha to $275/ha - since 2004.
The cost of inputs for sorghum rose 37 per cent from $210/ha to $335/ha.
"With the average rate of inflation, according to the Reserve Bank of Australia, at
2.85 per cent (and) assuming a three per cent rate for 2008, this cost increase is well
above that of other goods," Mr Pfeffer said.
The rising price of fertiliser would diminish farmers' financial returns for barley
and sorghum this year, he said.
As well, China's decision to increase tariffs on fertilisers to discourage exports,
had affected prices in Australia.

Fed: Climate change modelling not precise: Costello
CANBERRA, April 3 AAP - Federal Treasurer Peter Costello says the economic impact of
climate change was not included in the latest intergenerational report because current
modelling systems can't deliver accurate figures.
Mr Costello yesterday released a five year update on his intergenerational report of
2002, which considered the challenges faced by Australia as the population ages and the
nation has a smaller proportion of workers to meet the cost burden.
The federal government says it has made some progress in the past five years in preparing
the country for the next 40 years, but an ageing population will still mean Australia
facing a budget deficit of $35 billion in 2047.
Mr Costello said current climate change modelling was not accurate.
"You'd have to model not just the effects of climate change, but you have to model
responses, because they could affect the economy," he told the Nine Network.
"Responses could affect the economy, if they were the wrong responses, or if they were
responses which were too extreme, they could affect the economy as much as global warming
if not more."

Coming to America
In "his" bedroom, are the staples of any 8-year-old American boy. The toy cars and Legos are haphazardly spread across the floor. The Spiderman puzzle he put together this summer hangs on the wall, along with posters of a Dalmation and a skateboarder. A baseball and glove rest on a chair in the corner.
Downstairs, in his Spiderman T-shirt, he sits with a tub of popcorn balanced between his legs, watching Nickelodeon's Spongebob SquarePants on the flat-screen TV.
This is life as an American boy living with parents in the suburbs. And this is the way Maureen Lau will keep the spare bedroom in her Batavia home - the board games tucked in cubbies, the little plastic mock basketball hoop above his closet door - even after Vitaliy returns to his other life, in a Russian orphanage where rooms are shared and toys are communal.
"I would assume it's hard going back," said Lau, who signed on as the boy's host mother last month. "We can't really tell him we're adopting him, because if something legally falls through, it'd crush him."
Vitaliy arrived in the United States with six other Russian orphans in July through the "Bridge of Hope" program run by St. Mary's Services, an adoption agency in Chicago.
The 5-week program is promoted as a summer camp-type trip for the children, who might otherwise never get a chance to come to America, said Michaelyn Sloan, St. Mary's director of international adoptions. But it also serves to get families who are interested in international adoptions acquainted with school-age children who need a home but are well older that most are looking to adopt.
In the 10 years since the Cradle of Hope Adoption Center in Maryland began running these types of programs around the country, 90 percent of the 450 children brought in have been adopted, Sloan said. Last year, three of the four kids brought over by the Chicago agency were adopted by their host families.
Lau, a social worker at Hubble Middle School in Wheaton, said she looked for years at adopting a child. Because she's in her mid-40s, she's among the relatively few interested in kids older than toddler-age and quickly found out that international adoptions, though more expensive, have fewer restrictions.
"I've just always wanted to have kids," said Lau, who got married last year. "It's definitely been a lot more lively."
Preparing for visit
Before Vitaliy's arrival, she said she scanned the Internet for any information she could find on how children from different countries adjust to life in America. St. Mary's held an orientation on what kinds of behavior to expect, warning that many of the children who grew up in rural orphanages have never been in stores or cars or family settings.
Lau also received a fact sheet about Vitaliy, whose last name is not being used at the request of St. Mary's officials. She learned he was "bright, social, interacted well with other people" but little of how he ended up in an orphanage two years ago.
So she and her husband prepared as they could, spending months picking out clothes that matched his height and weight, and choosing toys that were "interesting but not overwhelming." They filled the once-empty guest room with blue linens and wooden cubbies. They learned common Russian phrases and contacted a translator who could be on call.
When they finally went to pick the boy up at the airport, though, Lau found preparation didn't draw out the details.
Vitaliy was familiar with Disney movies, but had never seen an ice cube or a rabbit. He quickly picked up on how to play with Super Soakers and on Slip 'n Slides but seemed taken aback by the grocery store.
Settling in
But 8-year-old boys of any culture are also fast learners, and in a few weeks, Vitaliy settled in easily to American life. He played games and put together art and crafts at a YMCA camp, swam in the afternoons, went bowling and mini-golfing - and looked for rabbits every morning in the neighborhood.
"Given that he's a little kid in a foreign country, he's really adapted well," Lau said.
Though Lau was "very, very nervous" about the language barrier, she and Vitaliy have come up with their own way of communicating. He giggles when the Laus try to speak butchered Russian, and babbles on in his native tongue as if there were no barrier at all. At the zoo, he could name every animal in English, and says numbers one through 10, and "thank you, thank you" with ease.
He points at a banana, asks the question with his eyes.
"Yes, you can have a banana," Lau responds, before telling him to throw away the parts that have turned brown.
"He talks to us as if we understand everything," said Lau. "From the minute we met him at the airport, he nonstop talks and talks."
At the end of July, Vitaliy boarded a plane back to Russia. Lau knows that the international adoption process is "not smooth sailing" and can take lots of money and longer than a year. She knows that children from broken homes and other countries can be tough to raise in her calm Batavia world.
She also knows kids are resilient, and families are loving.
Lau can't say she's going to adopt Vitaliy, but she will ask the Russian government for permission to visit him, and for him to visit her.
"What we can say is that we're interested in adopting," she said. "And we will keep his toys and belongings in his room."
Vitaliy, 8, watches Nickelodeon, at his host Maureen Lau's home in Batavia. St. Mary's Services, an adoption agency, facilitated the visit of school-age Russian orphans to America to experience the five-week 'Bridge of Hope' camp programMaureen Lau (right) of Batavia, and Vitaliy, 8, an orphan from Russia, create memory blocks for Laus garden in memory of Vitaliy who went back to Russia earlier this month.Criag Watson/Staff Photographer

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 18, 2001

The tender offer is dependent on the number of shares tendered representing at least 90 percent of all shares outstanding and representing a majority of the shares outstanding that are not owned by Seneca or its affiliates and the directors and executive officers of Organic. As reported by Seneca, if the tender offer is successfully completed, it will be followed by a merger in which each share not purchased in the offer will be converted into the right to receive, in cash, the price paid in the offer.

Capgemini Survey Reveals the Rising Importance of Social Media to Customer Care.(Company overview)
Most C-level executives still unsure how to harness social media's promise for business growth, despite its increasing prominence
NEW YORK -- Capgemini, one of the world's foremost providers of consulting, technology and outsourcing services, today announced the results of its third annual Executive Outsourcing Survey, which explores the perceptions and use of social media within customer care operations defined as all aspects of customer interaction management within the enterprise. The survey revealed that social media has become a critical tool for customer care across industries, as over half of senior executives (52 percent) indicated that social media is currently a part of their company's customer care operations, and 57 percent indicated they are aware that their company is currently monitoring online conversations. Thirty-six percent of executives say their company currently measures the value of its social media program for customer care, which is surprising given how relatively new social media is as a method to enhance customer care operations.
The survey, commissioned by Capgemini and conducted online in February by Harris Interactive among 302 senior executives at Fortune 1000 companies, reinforces that social media as a tool for customer care is here to stay. Over half of executives (57 percent) view social media as a means for inviting customer input on product and services, lead generation, responding to complaints, internal reporting, and measuring customer satisfaction. Interestingly, more than one in ten executives (13 percent) still view social media monitoring as a fad that will not significantly affect their company's success. Nevertheless, the overwhelming majority view social media as a critical part of a comprehensive customer care strategy.
Despite social media's growing role in customer care, there is still uncertainty amongst executives in how best to leverage the increasing influence of social media to benefit their company. For example, the survey points to confusion within the organization around whose role it is to manage social media for customer care, and when and how they should be interacting with customers. Most executives (73 percent) are unfamiliar with how many employees at their company are currently dedicated to "listening" to customer conversations on the internet, and most executives whose company is using social media activities with respect to customer care (64 percent) rely solely on their marketing department for social media monitoring. Furthermore, less than half of executives (41 percent) in companies monitoring online conversations about its brand, product and/or services only respond to an online conversation when a customer poses a direct question, representing a significant missed opportunity for companies to proactively solicit feedback and enhance the customer experience.
Given the lack of recognized best practices amongst companies today, many organizations look to partner with a skilled third party who can respond in real-time to social media interactions and can tie customer sentiment and trends to an effective business strategy. However, the survey indicated that many companies are not yet taking advantage of third party experts--almost half, or 48 percent of companies using social media as a component of their company's customer care operations or strategy do not currently outsource their customer care operations to third-party providers.
"The use of social media as part of a strategic customer operations strategy is still emerging, but it presents companies with a clear opportunity to engage with current customers, find new ones and build brand awareness in an increasingly competitive landscape," said David Poole, Vice President and Head of Americas Business Process Outsourcing, Capgemini. "We're dedicated to helping companies understand these opportunities through research and the delivery of service offerings that help our customers effectively operate in this new medium."
About the Survey
Harris Interactive[R] conducted the survey online within the United States between February 8 and 21, 2011 among a total of 302 Fortune 1000 Executives. Company revenue and number of employees were weighted where necessary to bring them into line with their actual proportions in the larger universe of Fortune 1000 companies.
All sample surveys and polls, whether or not they use probability sampling, are subject to multiple sources of error which are most often not possible to quantify or estimate, including sampling error, coverage error, error associated with nonresponse, error associated with question wording and response options, and post-survey weighting and adjustments. Therefore, Harris Interactive avoids the words "margin of error" as they are misleading. All that can be calculated are different possible sampling errors with different probabilities for pure, unweighted, random samples with 100% response rates. These are only theoretical because no published polls come close to this ideal.
Respondents for this survey were selected from among those who have agreed to participate in surveys. Because the sample is based on those who agreed to be invited to participate, no estimates of theoretical sampling error can be calculated.

Concierge Auctions and Doug Milne of Kelly Associates Produce Nearly $8 Million for Waterfront Estate in Darien, Conn.
French Norman-style home sold at auction will close for highest price in Darien this year
DARIEN, Conn., June 27, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- "Cove House", an elegant French Norman-style estate on 2.03 private acres abutting Scott's Cove in Darien, Connecticut, with access to the Long Island Sound and less than an hour from New York City, was sold at auction on Saturday, Concierge Auctions announced. In cooperation with listing broker Doug Milne of Kelly Associates, the auction outreach efforts produced more than 100 showings and resulted in 8 qualified bidders, all of which had not previewed the property or considered purchasing it prior to the auction announcement. The live auction competition generated nearly $8 million for the property, which upon closing next month will be the highest residential sale year-to-date in the Darien Multiple Listing Service.
"The team at Concierge Auctions and Doug Milne were exceedingly professional - an aggressive group of individuals who in many ways reminded me of my days on Wall Street," stated the seller, Andrew Osinski. "Before choosing to auction I weighed all of my options and analyzed the Concierge process in detail. Ultimately I was excited about the highly customized marketing plan, and I have to say they executed on everything promised. The process attracted interest, generated competition and created a market. It was a thrilling experience, and I firmly believe the future of luxury home sales will be increasingly weighted towards the Concierge Auctions methodology."
"We are thrilled to have produced such a significant sale for Fairfield County," stated Milne. "This was my first time to represent an auction seller, and from day one it was exciting to witness such strong buyer interest. The Concierge Auctions process is a great tool for luxury property sellers seeking the highest, market-driven price within a particular timeframe."
Designed to capture the stunning beauty of its surroundings, Cove House, located at 17 Tokeneke Trail, is a five bedroom, seven bathroom residence designed in an elegant French Norman style. Situated on 2.03 beautifully landscaped, private acres on Scott's Cove, the property features a manor home, guest cottage and private dock with access to the Long Island Sound and beyond. Darien, Connecticut is one of the most affluent towns in the United States and was rated one of the best places to live in the country by CNN. Many residents work in New York City and commute to Grand Central Terminal in less than an hour.
The precisely-controlled auction outreach campaign of internet, print and radio advertising, combined with aggressive sales efforts, broker outreach, and public relations, generated more than 100 showings, 8 qualified bidders, and over 2,000 visits to the auction website from 13 countries and all US states.
"This success is a direct result of the quality of the asset and the collaboration between our firm and Doug Milne of Kelly Associates," stated George Graham, CEO of Concierge Auctions. "It was a pleasure to work with such a skilled and sophisticated broker partner. Our joint marketing and sales efforts attracted real buyers from the tri-state area and beyond, including business executives, accomplished entrepreneurs and other wealthy individuals, many of whom had never seen or considered purchasing the property prior to the auction exposure. The market came to understand 'Cove House' as one of the most premier residences in the area, resulting in overwhelming interest and a record price. It was a great outcome in return for the seamless execution of everyone involved."
Bidding through Concierge Auctions is now underway for another premier Fairfield County estate, located on prestigious Round Hill Road in Greenwich, Connecticut, a mere 40 minutes to Manhattan. Situated on over 7 acres, the residence offers 6,222 square feet and the potential for up to 19,000 square feet of expansion or new construction. Bid now at www.GreenwichLuxuryAuction.com or call 866-649-8616.

Verizon Ready to Participate in World IPv6 Day; Company Encourages Users Around the World to Test IPv6 Protocol and Drive Traffic Onto Networks and to Websites.
M2 PRESSWIRE-June 8, 2011-: Verizon Ready to Participate in World IPv6 Day; Company Encourages Users Around the World to Test IPv6 Protocol and Drive Traffic Onto Networks and to Websites(C)1994-2011 M2 COMMUNICATIONS
RDATE:07062011
NEW YORK -- Today Verizon helps the industry mark an important Internet milestone by participating in the World IPv6 Day.
People around the world have been eagerly waiting to try the new Internet addressing system, which is called Internet Protocol version 6, or IPv6. Verizon is expecting that many users will take advantage of the Internet Society's (ISOC) World IPv6 Day "test flight," which begins today at 8 p.m. ET (0000 Universal Coordinated Time). The company has made preparations to handle the increased traffic and to answer customers' questions.
The current Internet addressing system, Internet Protocol version 4, which has been in place since the 1980s, eventually will be replaced by the new Internet protocol version 6 because the pool of IPv4 addresses is nearly depleted. The new IPv6 addressing system will expand the number of possible addresses from approximately 4 billion with IPv4 to roughly 340 trillion trillion trillion IPv6 addresses.
"World IPv6 Day marks an important industry milestone with the first global-scale trial of IPv6," said Jean McManus, executive director of Verizon's Corporate Technology organization. "Verizon was an early promoter and adopter of IPv6 back in the mid-1990s. It is very positive to see interest in IPv6 continuing to grow, and World IPv6 Day has just added to the IPv6 momentum."
During the 24-hour test period, users with IPv6 connectivity to the Internet will be able to connect to two IPv6-enabled Verizon websites, http://ipv6.verizonbusiness.com and http://wwwv6.verizon.com/fiostvv6/web/ . Users also can connect to the ISOC test site at http://test-ip6v.com/ to test their IPv6 hardware, software and operating systems.
Since using IPv6 technology will be new for some customers, Verizon has established a technical support team for World IPv6 Day to quickly address customer issues. Customers should follow their normal process to contact Verizon about service questions, and Verizon's care centers for consumers and small-to-medium and large businesses will tap the company's technical experts to answer customers' questions specific to IPv6 activity.
"This day gives us a great opportunity to help educate our enterprise customers about how to enable their network infrastructure for future growth and discuss the numerous benefits of IPv6," McManus said. "Companies will be able to expand their businesses and ensure long-term growth and scalability without being concerned about running out of IP addresses."
For more information about Verizon's role in this significant event and advancing IPv6 for the Internet, view a video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CEEc4Z7IP0 .
Using IPv6 Access to Connect to FiOS TV Central
To further take advantage of World IPv6 day, Verizon will make its FiOS TV Central website available to subscribers with IPv6 access. Users who have IPv6 connectivity can access the FiOS TV Central site at http://wwwv6.verizon.com/fiostvv6/web/ between 8 p.m. Tuesday (June 7) and 7:59 p.m. Wednesday (June 8). Both wireless and wireline users with IPv6 connectivity to the Internet should be able to reach the FiOS TV website.
FiOS TV Central allows subscribers to access a variety of features such as remote management of DVR settings and on-demand movies and TV. Those users who have FiOS TV online accounts and are interested in accessing details of their account will need to log in before proceeding to webpages that provide the FiOS TV Central features and controls.
"World IPv6 Day gives Verizon the opportunity to test drive some of the work we've been doing with applications and systems as part of our migration to IPv6", said Ruchir Rodrigues, vice president of the Verizon Corporate Technology organization. "Our Verizon technology teams have worked for several weeks with internal groups like IT and engineering to make sure we have all components - data center, equipment, firewalls, security and operating systems - IPv6-enabled for the test while not impacting any live production activity. Our systems are ready, and we are looking forward to customers connecting to our IPv6 websites."
Verizon is already running IPv6 on its 4G LTE network, global public IP network and vBNS (very high-speed backbone network service) network.
Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE, NASDAQ:VZ), headquartered in New York, is a global leader in delivering broadband and other wireless and wireline communications services to mass market, business, government and wholesale customers. Ruckus Wireless Continues Wi-Fi Innovation Introducing Higher Capacity 802.11n Access Points and a Raft of New Patents.
Ruckus Awarded Five New Patents in First Quarter of 2011, Introduces Industry's Highest Capacity Wi-Fi Access Points Capable of Supporting up to 512 Simultaneous Client Connections
SUNNYVALE, Calif., May 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Ruckus Wireless(TM) today announced that it has further extended Wi-Fi technology by expanding the capacity of its Wi-Fi access points to industry-leading levels. Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi 802.11n APs will be capable of supporting up to 512 concurrent client connections - an important innovation as new Wi-Fi-enabled mobile devices flood the enterprise and carrier markets.
In addition, Ruckus said that in the first three months of this year it was awarded five new patents by the United States Patent Offices (USPTO) that cover various Wi-Fi innovations, bringing the total number of patents granted to 27. Ruckus currently has over 30 additional patents pending.
"The dynamics of the Wi-Fi market is changing at lightning speed due to more sophisticated applications, users, and devices swarming wireless networks," said Selina Lo, president and CEO of Ruckus Wireless. "The mobile Internet phenomenon is having a dramatic impact on both enterprise and carrier infrastructures; Wi-Fi must be more robust and reliable, hence our laser focus towards new 802.11n developments. Ruckus is the only pure-play wireless company that is taking Wi-Fi where it's never been before and to where it needs to go."
IDC forecasts that over 50 million tablet devices, like Apple's iPad2, will ship this year. Different from conventional laptops, these devices aren't equipped with wired network connections - relying on wireless connectivity to connect users to the Internet and networked applications. The astounding increase of these Wi-Fi-enabled devices is placing heavy strains on corporate and carrier networks to support many more users and much higher levels of data traffic.
To help fix this problem, Ruckus has made system and software optimizations to its family of 802.11n access points to support a large number of simultaneous client connections, up to 256 client connections per radio. While dependent on environmental conditions, these advances, when combined with other innovations such as adaptive antenna technology, band steering, airtime fairness, and dynamic client load balancing, represent a major leap forward in Wi-Fi technology. This gives companies the confidence to service a large number of simultaneous Wi-Fi users, mobile or stationary, with the fewest number of access points.
Unlike conventional Wi-Fi technology, Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi delivers higher capacity and more reliable Wi-Fi connections to client devices through patented BeamFlex adaptive antenna technology. Completely compliant with IEEE 802.11 standards, Ruckus' BeamFlex optimizes RF signal paths in real-time to increase signal strength and dramatically improve overall capacity. It is also the only technology capable of actively mitigating and rejecting RF interference to provide more reliable Wi-Fi connectivity. Consequently, carriers and enterprises have the option to optimize their networks for either coverage or high capacity by deploying as few or as many Ruckus APs as desired to meet their goals.
Ruckus patents provide for full protection of its Smart Wi-Fi innovations. The newest patents awarded to Ruckus founders Bill Kish and Victor Shtrom, and engineers Darin Milton and Bernard Baron, cover innovations in the areas of intelligent antenna arrays, smart antennas with polarization diversity, best path signal controls, and patterns for shaping RF emissions.

BellSouth Introduces Multi-Million Dollar Advertising Campaign Reinforcing its Local Presence.
ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 3, 1997--With full-fledged local telephone competition drawing closer everyday, BellSouth is rolling out a new, multi-million dollar advertising campaign reinforcing its over 100-year-old tradition of customer service and involvement in the communities it serves.
Debuting on July 7, "Nobody Knows a Neighbor Like a Neighbor" will leverage BellSouth's core attributes of strong local market presence, its record of excellent customer service and its employee dedication.
"Change is the order of the day for a dynamic and expanding telecom industry," said Jere Drummond, BST president and CEO. "But BellSouth has a steadfast presence and we're determined to be better than any other company at serving our customers -- they will determine our future."
The dozen TV spots will highlight BellSouth's long tradition of providing exceptional service to customers - its neighbors. The lasting impression is one that says since BellSouth understands its customers better than anyone, it therefore is able to provide them with the capabilities, products and services they need better than anyone.
Produced by the company's advertising agency, Merkley Newman Harty, the new campaign will be launched with a 90-second commercial (a first for BellSouth) that will set the stage for the rest of the campaign. The spots will run during prime time in BellSouth's top 46 markets, and will appear on all major networks and cable TV.
All the commercials take place in the fictional town of Chatsford, which was created to feel very familiar to both employees and the customers they serve. This is a community like hundreds of others in the Southeast where BellSouth has provided dependable, reliable communications services for many years. The main character of the spots, Tyler Webb, is a composite of all BellSouth employees. Tyler serves as the viewer's guide to Chatsford, and either Tyler or his voice appears in every commercial.
"Being the neighbor brand is BellSouth's advantage in the Southeast," said Drummond. "Tyler Webb represents the neighbor that so many of our customers already know in BellSouth."
Each of the spots portrays characters from Chatsford in everyday situations that help showcase BellSouth's products and services, and demonstrate how Tyler, like all BellSouth employees, helps find solutions to his customers' communications needs.
In the first commercial, entitled "Classroom," the setting is easily identifiable to viewers and reinforces BellSouth's commitment to education. "Classroom" sets up Tyler as a presenter at Chatsford Elementary School's Career Day, and the interests of the children are evident as they continue to ask if Tyler "drives the truck." This is a common question to employees, since the truck is BellSouth's most external and recognizable symbol. The outcome of his interaction with the children is typical of the humorous situations found in the series of spots.
BellSouth's previous campaign ("It's All Here") implied that BellSouth has the capabilities that customers need. The evolution to "Nobody Knows a Neighbor Like a Neighbor" makes it clear that BellSouth understands what customers need because the company is in their communities and part of their daily lives.
"Even though technology has advanced, our tradition of service has not gone out of style," said Drummond. "Customers still want it delivered the old-fashioned way by a company they know - and that's BellSouth."
As evidence of its commitment to excellent customer service and its dedication to the communities it serves, the company points to the recent national awards it has won for customer service, including the J.D. Power award, and the fact that BellSouth employees and retirees volunteer annually, on average, over 12 million hours per year in their hometowns. In terms of dollars, that equates to about $160 million.
BellSouth is a $19 billion communications services company. It provides telecommunications, wireless communications, internet access, directory advertising and publishing and other information services to more than 27 million customers in 18 countries worldwide. Its telephone operations provide service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year over one of the most modern telecommunications networks in the world for approximately 22 million telephone lines in a nine-state region that includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

According to Minco Tool & Mold Manager of Marketing and Manufacturing, Gary Deaton, "The company's offerings have always been pretty broad, and are now even more diversified--covering a wider range of markets, yet staying true to our core capability of working with complex surfaces; utilizing our integrated CAD/CAM system and the very latest in machining technology. We do some molds that are simpler, but they are usually part of a package; or are an extremely short delivery time. By having the capability to handle large mold packages--from complex to simple parts in aggressive timeframes and with total validation capabilities--gives us ownership of the activity and creates a distinction for us from our competition."

Embracing Change
Looking back on the past decade, Deaton notes that while the company's employee base has decreased, such practices as eliminating waste and embracing best practices along with implementation of a Total Quality Management System has allowed the company to produce the same amount of activity with fewer people. Operating 24 hours a day also helps--something the company has done since 1984. "We have to continue to be very aggressive because of pricing and delivery pressures and be more effective and properly use the processes and equipment we have purchased," Deaton explains. If we look at revenue generated per employee, it is higher today than it was 10 years ago."
A heavy investment in equipment also has contributed to Minco Tool's longevity. "We average about a million dollar investment every year in new equipment," Deaton states. "To do this is quite a feat. This is our commitment to our customer, our employees, and our future. Recently we bought a five-axis mill. This year we bought a much larger boring mill and a new gun drill. We take advantage of the advancements in standard machines and rotate equipment out and bring on the newer technology. Generally extensive automation/pallet feeders do not come into play since we primarily build one-of-a-kind, custom tools, with one or two cavities."
Continuous Improvement
As for what the next decade holds for this company, Deaton knows the company must continue to grow. "I believe our future growth will be a continuation of the many things we are doing now," he says. "We will get better at new processes, continue to stay on top of the latest CAD/CAM developments, and keep our eyes on new cutter technologies. We are always looking at how we can do things faster and eliminate non value-added activity. In addition, we will continue to attend trade shows where we can benchmark our skills and network for new opportunities."
The company also plans to continue promoting to keep manufacturing/moldmaking in the United States. "We are not jumping on the bandwagon of taking on activity with low-cost countries," Deaton affirms. "We want to keep it here. I won't say we will never do it, but our goal continues to be (despite pressure from some of our customers) on complex tooling and surfaces with a focus on speed and quality. We want to keep activity here and maintain control and ownership. We are selling our reputation with every mold we build."
